Tunesday: Demi Lovato, Stromae, Tegan & Sara

Welcome back to another week where Monday’s over and it’s time to celebrate with Tunesday!  I hope you like this week’s picks as much as I do!

Something smooth

While the album and song are two years old, Demi Lovato’s self-titled album Demi featured one of her best ballads: “Nightingale”.  The song showcases a soul-rending tone that Lovato still has and utilizes in her latest works.  And while the performance is older, her rich tones still ring out in sustained sections.  If you know her current style, have a listen and hear what she came from.

Getting into the rhythm

While fast-paced tracks are easier than most to pick as they come up more often than ballads or wholly-good albums, I’ve got one that’s unique for you: “Carmen” by Stromae.  Stromae is a Belgian-born, half-Rwandan French electronic artist who uses homonyms to not only sing a song but criticize something or speak on society.  “Carmen” is meant to evoke the classic “Carmina Burana” and criticize people who ‘live’ on Twitter and get swallowed by the blue bird.  While music videos don’t typically add much to a song’s meaning, or obscure it completely, the video for “Carmen” clarifies a lot, especially if you aren’t familiar with French or hearing it spoken quickly.

Soundtrack to your day

Like I said, full, wholly-good albums are hard to find.  This week, I’d like to put forward Tegan & Sara’s album Love You To Death.  The female duo has an interesting style and they harmonize perfectly.  That together with their sometimes-fast electropop beat and backbeat makes an extremely enjoyable straight-through listening experience.  The album’s slower songs, “Dying to Know” and “100x”, are a lovely break that show off vocals over any complicated musical pattern

The Send-off

Hopefully you heard a name or two you didn’t know and are typing into another window or tab to find what the sound is after hearing it talked about.  If there’s someone or something we should be listening to, be sure to leave us a comment below, tweet us @thoughtnetblog, or me personally @TheNexusGen on Twitter and we can chat about it there.  Past that, this is the last Tuesday of the month, so that means look forward to Tech Tuesday today at 1 p.m. PST.  If that’s not your cup of tea or coffee, we’ll see you back here for Freeform Friday to celebrate the weekend.  Until then, have a great week!
